Psoriasis is a common skin condition where the skin appears dry, flakey, scaly and this can be very uncomfortable and itchy. These patches normally appear on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, but can appear anywhere on the body.

Psoriasis is caused by an increased production of skin cells. Skin cells are normally made and replaced every 3 to 4 weeks which is average cell turnover, however in people with psoriasis this process only takes about 3 to 7 days. The result is a build-up of skin cells, creating the patches associated with psoriasis. Although the process is not yet fully understood by experts, it is thought to be related to a problem with the immune system. The immune system is our body's defence against disease and infection, but it attacks healthy skin cells by mistake in people with psoriasis.

Psoriasis symptoms start or become worse because of a certain event, known as a trigger. Possible triggers include an injury to the skin, throat infections and using certain medicines. It can also be exacerbated by stress. Psoriasis can run in families, although the exact role genetics plays in causing psoriasis is unclear. The condition is not contagious, so it cannot be spread from person to person.

Although psoriasis cannot be completely cured, it can be managed and significantly improved through a course of Dermalux LED Light Therapy which is proven to be effective for this condition. Book a session today with our Shropshire Skin Clinic.
