Eczema, also known as Atopic Dermatitis, is a skin condition where the skin appears red, dry, cracked, itchy, sore and sometimes has open wounds. There are many potential triggers such as:

  • Irritants – certain soaps, detergents, shampoos, washing-up liquid and bubble bath may cause flare ups.

  • Environmental factors – such as cold and dry weather, dampness, house dust mites, pet fur, pollen and moulds may cause flare ups.

  • Allergies – common allergies include cows' milk, eggs, peanuts, soya or wheat.

  • Certain materials - wool and synthetic fabrics may irritate the skin and cause flare ups.

  • Hormonal changes – women may find their symptoms get worse in the days before their period or during pregnancy.

While some people may have only small patches of dry skin, others may suffer from sever inflammation across their whole body. Although atopic eczema can affect any part of the body, it most often affects the hands, insides of the elbows, backs of the knees and the face and scalp in children.

People with atopic eczema usually have periods when symptoms are less noticeable, as well as periods when symptoms become more severe (flare-ups). Eczema is usually a life long skin condition that can be managed and improved through an effective Eczema facial treatment plan, including a course of LED Light Therapy.
